Week by Week

Yesterday marked the beginning of the countdown for the anticipated growing season of '12.  Keeping in mind that Memorial Day weekend is the last day of frost, I counted 11 weeks till then.  The weather has been unusually nice and I started to work outside.  First, I used the garden hose to wash all the goat and chicken poop from the front lawn.  The grass in that area started to turn green and the chickens are starting to scratch all over the yard,  leaving huge holes in the ground.

Second, I raked all the hay near the front side of the wood shed, where the does use to lay and stay when we were milking them.  At this time, all the goats are together in the pen and we are not milking. I made Mozzarella cheese last week from 1 gallon of milk.  It was fun and easy.  I also made Ricotta from the left over whey.  So, for now we still have cheese.  But no milk.  I notice the does are starting to wean the babies, so we are running out of chances to milk them.  The rest of the day, I spent cleaning Fugee's lead in the back of the house.

I hope to start seeds this week and the book I follow is Week by Week Vegetable Gardener's Handbook by Ron and Jennifer Kujawski.  Seeds to start are : kale, cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli and lettuce.
