Finally Morels

Unexpectedly, as I was leading a group of students down a trail to a waterfall, I found what I have been wanting to find for a long time.  Morels.  Edible mushrooms that could be black and yellow, growing in deciduous or coniferous forests in mid Spring. They could also be found in burned apple orchards, or so I hear/read.  We ate them in pizza and they were delicious. I love finding wild edibles. The whole idea of being fed by nature without human intervention and dedicated expectation leads to a great feeling of connection with the Earth.

These photos I took during a brief walk in our backyard. It has been rainy in the last couple of weeks, and so everything seems so alive and ready to set fruit. The mushrooms, the red efts and the slugs seem to appreciate the warm days and cool nights and so do we.  I love working in the garden at this time. It is not too hot that you feel your back burning and not to cold that you want to be covered in fleece.

I have planted tomatoes, herbs, eggplants and squash in the garden.  Some beds have expanded to include more plants like squash and zucchini. I figured these plants enjoy the fresh composted hay/manure from the goat pen.
