Colors in Spring

Bulbs have been sprouting all over the yard. They are yellow, light orange and white. Some daffodils, tulips and crocus.  Other plants that are making their appearance are the delicious yet wild, Ramps.  Chives are growing fast and so is the garlic that we planted last fall.
One morning we noticed two garter snakes together and by looking at their different sizes, we could tell that they were a couple.  Also, we have seen golden finches, woodpeckers and the resident phoebes flapping their wings, calling, eating at the feeders and hunting insects.

All the sudden rush of life if what has persuaded me to plant and start my work in the garden.  Last week I planted peas, radishes and onion sets, all of which can survive the cold, sometimes frosty days and nights. Onions benefit from the lengthy daylight.
This week two of our four apple trees are flowering. The good news is that there will be no frost this week, which is one of the things that could ruin the apple harvest. All apple trees have also survived the goats, which loved to eat the bark of the trees.  I wrapped some black wrapping and plastic to the trunks of the apple trees to help the trees out. So far, the trees are setting leaves slowly but surely. The bad news is that we have no bees to pollinate the flowers. Our lovely and amazing bees have died. They did not make it thru the winter and we don't know why.
I have also started to loosen the soil, added organic fertilizer and fixed the walls of one bed that had collapsed.
I have started chard, cauliflower, kale, squash and other seeds indoors.
